제목에 대해서 On the Title

인생에서 하나 그리고 둘처럼 단순한 것은 거의 없습니다. 1980년대에 프랑스 신문 리베라시옹에서 칸 영화제 특집기사를 쓰기 위해 전세계의 영화감독들에게 했던 질문이 떠오르는군요. 질문은 이랬습니다. "왜 영화를 찍습니까?" 저의 한 줄 짜리 대답은 질문 만큼이나 단순했습니다. "그러면 말을 많이 할 필요가 없어지기 때문입니다."

Few things in life are as simple as ones and twos. I remember that, back in 1980s, the french newspaper Liberation posed a simple question to filmmakers all around the world for a special Cannes supplement. The question was: "Pourquoi filmez-vous?" My one-line answer was just about as simple as the question: "So I don't have to speak so much."

감독이 그가 만든 영화에 대해서 할 수 있는 가장 나은 말은 종이 위에서가 아니라 그의 영화 속에서 발견될 수 있을 겁니다. 이 영화는 인생의 하나나 둘처럼 매우 단순합니다. 나는 관객들이 영화를 보았을 때 그들이 편안한 친구와 함께 있었던 것처럼 느꼈으면 합니다. 만일 관객들이 "영화 작가"를 만났다는 인상을 받는다면, 전 제 영화가 실패했다고 여길 겁니다.

The best thing a director can say should probably be found inside the film he has made, not on the page. This film is very much as simple as the ones and twos in life. I'd like to viewers to come away from the film with an impression of having been with a simple friend. If they came away with the impression of having encountered "a filmmaker," then I'd have come tp consider the film a failure. 

영화는 단순히 인생에 대한 것입니다. 여기서 인생은 이것의 순환주기 스펙트럼을 가로질러서 묘사되죠. 작가로서의 제 신조는, 단순함은 겉으로 드러나는 모든 복잡성의 기초를 이룬다는 것입니다. 따라서, 영화의 중국어 제목인 yi yi는, 직역하면 "하나 하나"가 되는데, 중국어에서 "하나 하나" 는 "각각의"라는 뜻이 됩니다. 이것은 탄생부터 죽음까지, 각 세대를 대표하는 가족 구성원들을 통해서 인생을 묘사하는 영화의 방식을 의미합니다. "A one and a two and a...."라는 말은 재즈 뮤지션들이 즉흥 연주 전에 언제나 중얼거리는 말이죠. 여기서 영화의 영어 제목이 온 것입니다. 이런 제목이 붙여진 영화에서 보여질 것은 전혀 긴장되거나 무겁거나 스트레스 받는 것이 아니라는 것을 뜻하고요. 인생은 재즈 운율 같아야 해요.

The film is simply about life, portrayed across a spectrum of its span. In my view as the writer, simplicity is what's at the bottom of the whole lot of complications at the top.Therefore, the Chinese title of the film is Yi Yi, which literally translates as "one one," and "one one" means "individually" in Chinese. This signifies the film's portrayal of life through each individual member at each representing age, from birth to death. "A one and a two and a...." is what's always muttered by jazz musicians before a jam session. This is where the English title of the film came from, to signify that what's following the title is not something tense or heavy or stressful. Life should be like a jazzy tune.
